I happen to be a diplomat. Like dozens of thousands of others. Diplomacy is far from an elite calling reserved for the privileged few it used to be in the world of yesterday. Yet, there are still many myths surrounding diplomacy and many monikers used for diplomats. Are diplomats “honest liars” as one of them, Sir Henry Wotton, joked more than 400 years ago? Collectively, we diplomats represent a cacophony of voices: agendas, interests (both sordid and noble), truths and lies. As cold butchers, we have helped to slice up the globe and slaughter nations. As angels, we work towards the world peace. Quietly. Obediently. Cogs in political machines, large and small. Butchers & Angels is a very personal account of today’s diplomacy as lived and practiced in a European city. Refreshingly, all opinions expressed here are mine. They represent an official position of no power other than mine.
